LASIK EYE SURGERY

A rapid and painless treatment called Lasik, or Laser-Assisted in Situ Keratomileusis, reshapes the cornea to treat nearsightedness, farsightedness, and astigmatism. PRK (PHOTOREFRACTIVE KERATECTOMY)

An alternative to Lasik for people with thinner corneas is PRK, or photorefractive keratectomy. PRK does not entail making a flap on the cornea like LASIK. Instead, the surgeon removes the cornea’s outermost layer, known as the epithelium, and then shapes the underlying tissue using a laser. The eye is then covered with a shielding contact lens to aid in healing. Although PRK normally requires a longer period for recovery than LASIK, it is still a secure and reliable method of vision correction.

CROSSLINKING (CORNEAL COLLAGEN CROSS-LINKING)

For patients with keratoconus, a disorder that weakens and enlarges the cornea, crosslinking, also known as corneal collagen cross-linking, strengthens the cornea. Riboflavin drops are used during the process to coat the cornea, which is then subjected to UV light. As a result, the cornea’s collagen fibers crosslink, strengthening it and increasing its resistance to bulging. A less invasive procedure called crosslinking can eliminate the need for more invasive eye procedures like corneal transplant surgery.
